HRH The Countess of Wessex as Patron of Foundation of Light, attended the Beacon of Light Event

Yesterday in the evening, HRH The Countess of Wessex as Patron of Foundation of Light, attended the Beacon of Light Event at the Stadium of Light, Sunderland. My post on HRH’s Patronage can be found here. The Foundation of Light was established in 2001 by former club Chairman Sir Bob Murray CBE. It is a registered charity of Sunderland AFC, that uses the power of football to involve, educate and inspire children and adults to help them realise their potential.

Lesley Spuhler, Foundation of Light CEO, said: “We’re delighted to welcome HRH Countess of Wessex back to the North East to raise awareness of the exciting Beacon of Light project. It’s 10 years ago this month that she opened the Centre of Light classrooms at the stadium, which have had a massive impact on this community. A decade on and she is still as keen to help improve lives of those in the North East, and the Beacon of Light will be the next logical step.

HRH was aguest of honour at an event to raise awareness of the Beacon of Light project, pioneered by the Foundation of Light charity. The Beacon will be an exciting and inspiring education, training and sports facility built on brownfield land in Sunderland. Located next to both the Sunderland Aquatic Centre and the Stadium of Light, it will also be an important catalyst for the wider re-generation of this quarter of the city. Building work will begin in late 2015, with the doors opening in 2017. Plans are in place to build the facility on land next to the Stadium of Light.

The Countess met children and adults that took part in demonstrations of activities that will take place at the proposed permanent home for the foundation, housing classrooms, a sports and events hall and floodlit outdoor junior football pitches.
