‘The Countess of Wessex Cup’ 2016 challenge

Today, on the 4th October The Countess of Wessex as Sponsor of HMS DARING, Royal Colonel of 5th Battalion The Rifles, and Honorary Air Commodore of Royal Air Force Wittering attended ‘The Countess of Wessex Cup’ at RAF Wittering in Wittering, Cambridgeshire.

The Countess of Wessex Cup is an annual competition for Armed Forces personnel from almost all Services that The Countess has honorary military appointments. As Daily Mail (quite nicely) writes: ‘The event enables Her Royal Highness to challenge her units to compete in a series of challenges, as well as meet with their commanding officers and meet members of the Units’.

This year competitors came from RAF Wittering, 5th Battalion The Rifles, Queen Alexandra’s Royal Army Nursing Corps, The Corps of Army Music & The Lincoln & Welland Regiment (regiment of the Canadian Army). They all faced a mixture of physical and mental challenges. This year’s competition was first for QARANC and The Lincoln & Welland Regiment units. Sadly the team from HMS Daring was unable to compete.

According to the Daily Mail even HRH The Countess ‘threw herself into the day and even carried two jerry cans, each weighing 20kgs, as part of one task’. It looks like Sophie is very fit since her Diamond challenge and wanted to try some of the tasks on her own. Also, with thanks to tweet from lcarveth, RAF Wittering is the winner of this year’s Cup. Huge congratulations!

Group Captain Pratley very happy with the result, said:It’s been a great day. All the teams have worked really hard, they can all leave with pride intact – they absolutely gave it everything. Of course, it’s nice to have the competition here and it’s great to win, I am really proud of our team they’re a credit to the Station.”
