Opening of Portesbery School & reception for England Hockey

Today (17th November), The Countess of Wessex officially opened Portesbery School, Newfoundland Road in Deepcut, Camberley, Surrey. Portesbery is an all age day school (2 -19 years) catering for children and young people with Severe Learning Difficulties (SLD). Pupils attending this school may have additional sensory impairments, physical difficulties or challenging behaviour.

The school first opened on January 29th 1973 and was designed under the Ministry of Health prior to Special Schools becoming the responsibility of the Ministry of Education under the 1970 Education Act; as a result it was taken over and built by the Education Authority. In 2015 the school moved in to brand new, purpose-built premises in Deepcut, Camberley. You will learn more here. During the visit, The Countess was given a tour of the school. Sophie unveiled a plaque commemorating the occasion and was presented with a bouquet of flowers and some hand-made cards.

Also today, The Countess as Patron of England Hockey held a Reception. Great Britain’s women team have won a first Olympic hockey gold medal in Rio, in August 2016. Here‘s my post on the message HRH recorded prior to that Olympic Games final. Also last week, The Great Britain Women’s Hockey Team was presented with the Team of the Year Award from the Association of National Olympic Committees (ANOC) at their General Assembly in Doha.

The reception hosted by The Countess was attended by players and support team members from GB Hockey. You can also notice lovely Lady Louise, who is a huge hockey fan, as is her mum. I am very happy to be able to share this pictures with you.

I will try to update this tiny post with few images of the school’s visit (if I will be given permission) and more info in due time. For now visit school’s Facebook album by clicking here. Official pictures were taken by photographer, Andy Newbold, his album can be found here. Mark Cuthbert was also there, his gallery is here. And for Daily Mail article, click here.
