Birthday Festivities in Norway with The Countess of Wessex

Today, on the 10th May, 80th Birthday Festivities continued in Norway. In the morning, the King and Queen of Norway hosted guests on their royal yacht the Norge before the Royal Guard marched from the palace through the city to the Oslo Opera House via Karl-Johans gate and the Jernbanetorget plaza. The Countess of Wessex arrived with Prince Albert of Monaco and Grand Duke Henri and Grand Duchess Maria Teresa.

The mini-cruise around the Oslofjord on board the Norge given the public a chance to spot the royals and their guests as they boarded at the Honnørbrygga jetty near Oslo City Hall. Here they were accompanied by guests from the Danish royal family, who have travelled to Norway for the occasion on their own royal ship, the Dannebrog, that has been docked at Akershus Fortress. Video feed of that event can be found here, sadly the quality is quite poor.

After the Guard has marched through town, the King and Queen themselves have followed, being driven through Oslo from the Palace to the Opera House. The Countess arrived accompanied by  Princess Märtha Louise of Norway, daughter and elder child of King Harald V and Queen Sonja. She is fourth in the line of succession to the Norwegian throne, after her brother Haakon, and his two children.

The King and Queen and their guests afterwards attended an official banquet hosted by the Government in honour of their 80th anniversaries at the Norwegian Opera and Ballet. There was time for speeches that should be uploaded here in due time. Celebrations at Oslo Opera House concluded with fireworks at 10:30pm.

I was very happy to see HRH The Countess of Wessex representing British Royal Family in Norway. Surely, Prince Edward was missed, but Sophie is friends with royals attending birthday festivities, also the scheduled plan has kept her quite busy, so I’m sure she has enjoyed her time away from UK. I also want to applaud HRH for her fashion choices. I absolutely loved yesterday’s bottle-green gown by Suzannah, it was a perfect choice for The Countess.

Wow! The Countess looks really fab in this gown. I like this gown even more than the green one from the other evening. Her hair looks really lovely — I think it has more volume in this style and it really suits her! Beautiful.

Have to agree with all previous posts, Sophie looked absolutely stunning ! Don't think we've seen her hair styled in this fashion before ! But Wow, married up with that exquisite gown, she was the best dressed there tonight !
Thanks Anna for the posts !

  4. I totally agree with all that has been said about the Countess as it pertains to her style for this event. However, I would like to add, that I have never seen the Countess styled so beautifully! Granted she was always fashionable but this time she was “hitting her stride” in every way. Her dresses “kissed her curves” just right and the added volume to the skirt just totally put it over the top! Regal is good, but somehow seems an inadequate word to use in this instance because it was so much more. But then, she had owned this 50's look since it reappearance on the fashion front a few years ago. To complete the picture her makeup was flawless–it was still her “natural-clean- face look” but with the eyes and lips more defined. Her up-do was soft and framed her face perfectly. The only piece missing was her handsome prince! I would be remiss if I did not mention her casual daywear which was colorful and lively on what looked like a dreary day weather-wise.

Thank you Anna for your coverage. Well done!

  5. I love the pashmina she wore to the lunch, I hope someone can identify it; not that I would have anywhere to wear it, it doesn't often get cold enough here in the Arizona desert.

  6. I dont think I can remember seeing her hair styled this way before, she looks younger than her age anyway but looked younger still with this style, it really suited her, hope she does this again for evening engagements.
